June 12: National Dane Day (National
Great Dane Day): -- Dane is ranked as of 2025 as the 1,299th most
popular given name in the United States, with an estimated
population of 23,054. It is believed that there are 7.23 people
named Dane for every 100,000 Americans. Historically, it is said
that Dane is the transferred use of an Anglo-Saxon surname that
originated as a topographical name from the Olde English 'denu,'
which means 'valley' to indicate a person who dwelled in a valley.
The surname Dean is derived from the same place but a different
English dialect transformed it into Dane. The first time that this
surname was spelled was in the 14th Century and was rendered as
"Danne." Alternately, Dane was also used to indicate a
Danish person hailing from Denmark, just as Hamlet was referred to
as "The Dane." The Danes are a North Germanic tribe that
dates back to ancient times and, around the ninth century, they
began invading and settling in England. In fact, in the early 11th
century, King Canute ruled both Denmark and England as a single
realm for almost 20 years. As a given name, Dane is relatively
modern. It skyrocketed in the United States in the latter half of
the 20th Century. This name is primarily a male name and means
'God Is My Judge' Or 'From Denmark.' In English, it is pronounced,
'dayn.' Dane has also a biblical meaning in Hebrew meaning 'God
will judge.' Moreover, the name Dane has a different spelling that
reads "Dayne." On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

June 12: National Red Rose Day: -- A day
to pay tribute to one of the most iconic symbols of love and
romance throughout history - the red rose. Incidentally, the rose
is also the birth flower for June, and June is a popular month for
weddings; so what could be more apt. While roses all over the
nation begin to bloom, National Red Rose Day is a time for lovers,
botanists, florists, and basically, anyone else, to get together
to pay tribute to this classical flower. It has stood the test of
time and will probably do so for years to come. The best part is
that there's something for everyone. Whether you're a nature
lover, just stopping to smell the roses and marvel at their
beauty; or if you're a hopeless romantic who likes to make
gestures - the red rose is as versatile as can be, to suit your
interpretation of it. Also, did you know that in three different
languages (Spanish, Portuguese, and French) the word 'rose' means
'red?' How's that for serendipity! If you're looking for Date
ideas for your loved one, Check out 50 date ideas. In keeping with
the sense of romance and mystique which a red rose can evoke, the
exact origins of Red Rose Day are unknown, though it is said to
have branched off from Rose Day (celebrated during Valentine's
Week in February), for the past decade. Whatever the reason for
this separation, we are glad to have an excuse to give this
scarlet bloom its due. Surprisingly, the first records of roses
being cultivated come from China, around 5000 years ago, during
the Han Dynasty (141-87 B.C.). Though the flowers were what we
call Chinese roses (a variant of Hibiscus flowers) or wild roses,
they had similar characteristics to the modern-day red rose and
can be seen in paintings and pottery of that era. The red rose
then made its way to the culture-soaked civilizations of Rome and
Greece, where it was cultivated and evolved into what we know it
as today, in the Middle East especially. For the Greeks and
Romans, the red rose was a symbol of luxury and an object of
inspiration for many painters and writers. Perhaps that is why we
now associate this luxurious flower with passion and grandiosity.
By the time Christianity spread to Europe, the rose's popularity
dipped because it was seen as encouraging vices like excess and
decadence. However, it soon rose in popularity again and went on
to have a bit of a bloody history too. In Tudor England (1500s),
two royal factions - House of York and House of Lancaster, each
with a rose as their symbol, fought a series of battles against
each other; which are now collectively termed as the War of the
Roses. House Lancaster (red rose) eventually emerged victoriously
and the two roses were merged to form the 'Tudor Rose'. Other than
this bit of violent history, however, the red rose continues to be
a popular expression of love, romance, beauty, and all things that
are right with the world. The rose was brought to the Western
World by crusader knights who were first introduced to them in the
Holy Land during The Crusades. It became thereafter a symbol of
all the Eastern World's mystical wisdom that the knights likewise
brought back with them, symbolized in its fullest form in The Rose
Cross (Rose Croix, Rosy Cross) of The Rosicrucians ("The Rosy
Christians"). The Timeline faux TV Newscast series on The

June 12: National Jerky Day: -- A cause
for celebration for meat lovers all over! For centuries and across
cultures, people have been finding innovative ways to preserve
their meat (before the days of the refrigerator), and National
Jerky Day seeks to celebrate one of the most successful ways of
doing so - by curing and drying meat. Essentially jerky can refer
to any meat (alligator, kangaroo -- you name it!) that has been
cut into strips, dehydrated, and then cured. Some variants have
flavors added to them, while some are also smoked. Either way,
jerky is a food that is gaining popularity as people recognize the
practical (and health) benefits of this meaty treat. National
Jerky Day was first founded in 2012, by two major meat companies -
Jack Link's Beef Jerky and the Wisconsin Beef Council. The idea
behind it was not only to increase sales but to celebrate the
growing rise in popularity of dried meat snacks all over.
According to some consumer surveys, the demand for meat snacks now
comes second only to that of potato chips, hence jerky deserves a
day of its own! Historically, we have only to think of any
hunter-gatherer communities or nomadic tribes and dried meat comes
to mind as the main element of their diets. Hence methods of
curing and drying meat have also been around for centuries. It is
the best way to preserve meat, reduce its bulk, and also carry it
on the go. The word 'jerky' itself gets its origins from the
ancient Incan language Quechua, where the term 'ch'arki' was used
to refer to 'dried, salted meat'. Once the Spanish came to South
America, they changed the word to 'charqui,' which was then
anglicized into the word 'jerky.' The invention of beef jerky is
now commonly attributed to South America in the 1800s, however,
there have been versions of jerky invented across history and
people groups. For example, many Native American tribes also made
their own jerky out of buffalo meat. They would combine this with
dried fruits and suet (hard fat of beef) to make a food called
'pemmican'. This would last long and be ideal for traveling
because it was both nutritious and portable. Today, there is a
huge market for jerky in its different forms across the world. A
peek into any meat-eating culture might show you different methods
of preparing dried meat but, at the end of the day, it's all forms
of jerky. Across the U.S. itself, every gas station, supermarket,
and convenience store is bound to have a selection of jerky,
elevating snacking to another level. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

June 12: Raggedy Ann And Andy Day: -- A
day that pays tribute to the two cartoon and book characters that
became a phenomenon in the U.S. The journey of the characters
started with the Raggedy Ann doll who was the favorite childhood
companion of every young girl in the country. From there, the
character was introduced into books and then cartoons. And of
course, this is how Raggedy Andy came into being! Do you have some
Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls or books stored up in your attic? Well,
now is the perfect day to revive all the wonderful memories.
Raggedy Ann and Andy are characters that are now an essential part
of American culture. And the entire success of the franchise goes
solely to the creator Johnny Gruelle. Gruelle, who was the son of
a painter, worked as a newspaper cartoonist. In 1910, he won the
first prize in a comic drawing contest by the "New York
Herald." From thereon, he continued to illustrate children's
stories and seemed to possess a love for creating content for
kids. While there are many stories behind the origins of the
raggedy doll, it is believed it all started when Gruelle's
daughter brought a faceless cloth doll from her grandmother's
attic. Gruelle decided to give the doll a face and drew some
features on it. He also sewed a shoe button in place of a missing
eye. From thereon, started the creation of the Raggedy Ann dolls
that gained great popularity in the U.S. The features of the doll
include red hair and a triangle nose. Once the doll gained fandom,
Gruelle started to use the character in a series of books he was
writing and illustrating for children. The books included several
other characters such as Ann's brother Andy. Popularly known as
Raggedy Andy, the character was introduced in 1920. The duo gained
such popularity that over 1000 stories were written about them.
The success of the books also led to the launch of the Raggedy Ann
and Andy cartoons. The characters were then used on children's
clothes furnishing and other daily use objects. On Sale @ 15% Off

June 12, 1967: Loving Day: -- The United
States Supreme Court in Loving v. Virginia declares all U.S. state
laws which prohibit interracial marriage to be unconstitutional.
Loving v. Virginia, 388 U.S. 1 (1967) is a landmark civil rights
decision of the United States Supreme Court, which invalidated
laws prohibiting interracial marriage. The case was brought by
Mildred Loving (nee Jeter), a woman of color, and Richard Loving,
a white man, who had been sentenced to a year in prison in
Virginia for marrying each other. Their marriage violated the
state's anti-miscegenation statute, the Racial Integrity Act of
1924, which prohibited marriage between people classified as
"white" and people classified as "colored".
The Supreme Court's unanimous decision determined that this
prohibition was unconstitutional, overruling Pace v. Alabama
(1883) and ending all race-based legal restrictions on marriage in
the United States. The decision was followed by an increase in
interracial marriages in the U.S., and is remembered annually on
Loving Day, June 12. It has been the subject of several songs and
three movies, including the 2016 film Loving. Beginning in 2013,
it was cited as precedent in U.S. federal court decisions holding
restrictions on same-sex marriage in the United States
unconstitutional, including in the 2015 Supreme Court decision
Obergefell v. Hodges. Loving Day is an annual celebration held on
June 12, the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, which
struck down all anti-miscegenation laws remaining in sixteen U.S.
states. Loving Day is not an officially recognized holiday by the
U.S. government, despite attempts to make it so. Loving Day is the
biggest multiracial celebration in the United States. On Sale @

June 12: Women Veterans Day (Various
States Of The United States): -- An annual holiday that marks the
anniversary of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, enacted
June 12, 1948, that enabled women to serve as permanent, regular
members of the armed forces in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and
the recently formed Air Force. The date is not recognized
nationally, but is recognized by a number of states, either
through legislation or proclamation, and organizations. As of
2024, those states are California, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan,
New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas,
Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Washington. The stated goal of Women
Veterans Day varies somewhat by state, but can generally be
acknowledged as an effort to honor the work of women in the United
States Armed Forces and recognize the unique challenges that they
have faced. The date was first recognized when the New York State
Assembly declared June 12, 2008 to be Women Veterans' Recognition
Day. While Women Veterans Day is currently only a state recognized
commemoration, there is an effort to have the day recognized at a
national level. U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey
introduced a resolution in both 2019 and 2020 to have June 12
officially recognized as "Women Veterans Appreciation Day."
The purpose of the resolution is to address "the disparities
in care, recognition and benefits that our women veterans receive"
and to "highlight the growing presence of women in the Armed
Forces and the National Guard; and pay respect to women veterans
for their dutiful military service." In 2020, Senator Cory
Booker submitted a companion resolution in the U.S. Senate. On

June 12: Superman Day: -- A day meant to
celebrate the iconic Kryptonian and the nearly 90 years of
storylines he's been a part of. Superman Day was founded in 2013
by D.C. Entertainment, leading up to the release of "Man of
Steel." The day was originally called "Man of Steel Day"
and was celebrated by comic book retailers - in collaboration with
D.C. - by giving out free copies of "All-Star Superman #1
Special Edition." The continuation of the day in subsequent
years, along with the name change, seemed to have happened
organically. Born Kal-El on the dying planet of Krypton, Superman
was first penned onto the pages of a comic book in 1933 by Jerry
Siegel and Joe Shuster. His character slowly evolved, and first
appeared as the character we know him to be on April 18, 1938, in
"Action Comics #1." Kal-El was sent to Earth from his
home planet by his birth parents Jor-El and Lara in their final
attempt to save their son from the planet's impending destruction.
He was raised on Earth as Clark Kent by his adoptive parents,
Martha and Jonathan Kent of Smallville, Kansas. As he grew up,
Clark and his parents discovered his superhuman abilities,
including superstrength, laser vision, x-ray vision, flight, and
invulnerability, among others. The dichotomy between Clark and his
alter ego, Superman, acts as a major source of tension in
Superman's storylines, as Clark juggles his job as a reporter and
his activities as a symbol of hope. Superman, since his creation,
has acted as a beacon of hope for the people of Earth - his
unyielding kindness and resolve to help humans are perhaps some of
the most recognizable aspects of his persona. Superman is
synonymous with benevolence, selflessness, and courage. Over the
years, Superman has appeared in a variety of media formats -
comics books, newspaper comic strips, cartoons, films, video
games, etc. The character has been played and voiced by actors
like Henry Cavill, Bud Collyer, Kirk Alyn, and Brandon Routh,

June 12: Philippines Independence Day: --
June 12, 1898: The Decolonisation Of Asia: The Decolonization Of
The Americas: The 1896 Philippine Revolution: The Cuban War Of
Independence (The Necessary War): The Spanish-American War: The
Philippine Declaration Of Independence (Philippines Independence
Day): -- Filipino revolutionary forces General Emilio Aguinaldo
declares the Philippines' independence from Spain in Cavite el
Viejo (present-day Kawit, Cavite), Philippines. Named after King
Philip II of Spain, the Philippines asserted the sovereignty and
independence of the Philippine islands from the 333 years of
colonial rule from Spain. The Philippines were among the last
colonies of the Spanish Empire, which saw a massive decline
particularly in the 1890s. Cuba rebelled in 1895, and the empire
soon fought against the United States in a war that they lost. In
June 1898, Philippine revolutionaries declared independence.
However, this was not recognized by Spain, which sold the islands
to the United States in the Treaty of Paris. Led by Andres
Bonifacio, the Katipunan was formed in secrecy in 1892 in the wake
of the nascent La Liga Filipina, an organization created by
Filipino nationalist Jose Rizal and others in Spain with goals of
Philippine representation to the Spanish Parliament. Katipunan's
influence soon gained traction across the islands, and seeks for
an armed revolution. However, that revolution started prematurely
in August 1896 upon its discovery by Spanish authorities in
Manila. The organization soon declared war against Spain in
Caloocan. Early battles and skirmishes were centered around
sieging the capital city of Manila led by Bonifacio himself, which
ultimately failed. However, revolutionaries in the neighboring
provinces fared better, particularly in Cavite, where rebels led
by Mariano Alvarez and cousins Baldomero and Emilio Aguinaldo won
early major victories. This disparity in success, along with
multiple factors, contributed to the eventual power struggle from
within Katipunan's leadership. Two factions formed: Bonifacio's
Magdiwang and Aguinaldo's Magdalo. This struggle culminated in the
1897 elections in Tejeros, which saw Emilio Aguinaldo elected as
president in absentia. Bonifacio nullified the results after a
Magdalo member questioned his election as the Secretary of the
Interior. This resulted in a schism, with Bonifacio's supporters
alleging that the elections was fraudulent, with Bonifacio himself
refusing to recognize the results. In April 1897, Aguinaldo
ordered the arrest of Bonifacio. A trial was set in Maragondon,
where the Magdalo-led jury found Bonifacio and his brother
Procopio guilty of treason, sentencing both of them to death.
Despite calls for commuting the sentence for the sake of national
unity, the brothers were executed in May 1897. Later that year,
Aguinaldo's government and Spanish authorities signed the Pact of
Biak-na-Bato, which temporarily reduced hostilities. Filipino
revolutionary officers exiled themselves to Hong Kong. However,
the hostilities never completely ceased. On April 21, 1898, after
the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor, the United States
declared war against the Spanish Empire, starting the
Spanish-American war. On May 1, the U.S. Navy's Asiatic Squadron,
under George Dewey, decisively defeated the Spanish Navy in the
Battle of Manila Bay, effectively seizing control of the area
surrounding Manila. On May 19, Aguinaldo, unofficially allied with
the United States, returned to the Philippines and resumed attacks
against the Spaniards. By June, the rebels had gained control of
nearly the entirety of the countryside, while the cities remained
under Spanish control. On June 12, Aguinaldo issued the Philippine
Declaration of Independence in Kawit. Although this signified the
end date of the revolution, neither Spain nor the United States
recognized Philippine independence. The Treaty of Paris was signed
between Spain and the United States, formally ending Spanish rule
to the islands and the Spanish-American war. Despite attempts by
the Filipino government, there were no Filipinos in the treaty. On
February 4, 1899, fighting broke out between the Filipino and
American forces, beginning the Philippine-American War. Aguinaldo
immediately declared war, ordering "that peace and friendly
relations with the Americans be broken and that the latter be
treated as enemies". In June 1899, the First Philippine
Republic formally declared war against the United States, which
ended with Aguinaldo's capture and surrender by the Americans in
April 1901. As a result, the islands become a colony of the United
States. A commonwealth government was formed in 1936, with Manuel
L. Quezon, Aguinaldo's aide-de-camp during the revolution,
assuming presidency. Literacy rates increased as many American
teachers were sent to the Philippines, and the USA promised that
the Philippines would become completely independent in 1945. On
December 10, 1941, Japan invaded the Philippines, and leading to
the capture of all of the Philippines islands by the Japanese. In
October, 1944, American troops returned to the Philippines and
recaptured the Philippines. The Philippines finally became fully
independent on July 4, 1946, 50 years after the start of the
revolution, with Manuel Roxas as the first president of the newly
independent nation. The Philippines, consisting of more than 7,000
separate islands in the western Pacific, has made great strides
since then. It's considered to be an emerging market and a newly
industrialized country. Tourism also makes a large impact on the
Philippines economy. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

June 12, 1999 ceasefire in the Kosovo War, Operation Joint
Guardian, a NATO-led United Nations peacekeeping force (KFor)
which entered the province of Kosovo in Federal Republic of
Yugoslavia. The holiday was established and sponsored by the
United Nations. 1.2 million people were forced to flee their homes
as a result of the conflict, which began when rebel forces
attempted to overthrow Serbian sovereignty and was countered with
heavy aggression by the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. On June 3,
an agreement was struck to cease the fighting, and NATO
peacekeepers arrived in Kosovo on June 12 to begin the process of
establishing a safe zone. It is a significant date in Kosovo's
history, as it marks the beginning of the country's transition to
an autonomous, democratic system. After decades of Serbian
dominance, the tide of the 20th century brought with it hints of a
revolution for the autonomous province of Kosovo. Throughout the
20th century, tensions between Kosovo's Albanian and Serbian
communities boiled over, resulting in the Kosovo War of 1998 and
1999. In the 1990s, the Kosovo Liberation Army (K.L.A.) had gained
enough momentum and began to struggle against the oppression and
persecution that Serbia was inflicting on its citizens. Throughout
the 1990s, the K.L.A.'s campaign had grown tremendously and had
begun to deliberately target and assault Serbian police
enforcement in Kosovo. Serbian authorities began cracking down on
K.L.A. members and sympathizers in 1998, having had enough of the
attacks. To resolve the conflict, NATO was forced to step in after
diplomatic efforts proved fruitless. This was a turning point in
the war because NATO helped the K.L.A. drive the Yugoslav forces
back. Up to 1,000 NATO aircraft operated mostly from bases in
Italy and aircraft carriers stationed in the Adriatic Sea during
the NATO bombing operation, which lasted from March 24 to June 11,
1999. A treaty called the Kumanovo Agreement was signed on June 3,
1999, and it called for the withdrawal of Yugoslav and Serb forces
from Kosovo and for an international presence to be set up in the
area. On June 12, 1999, the first NATO troops entered the capital
city of Kosovo, Pristine. Having declared its independence from
Serbia on February 17, 2008, Kosovo has been recognized as a

June 12, 1990: Russia Day: -- The
parliament of the Russian Federation formally declares its
sovereignty. Russia Day (Russian: Den' Rossii), called Day Of
Adoption Of The Declaration Of State Sovereignty Of The RSFSR
(Russian: Den' Prinyatia Declaratsii O Gosudarstvennom Suvernitete
RSFSR) before 2002, is the national holiday of the Russian
Federation. It has been celebrated annually on June 12 since 1992.
The day commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of State
Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic
(RSFSR). The passage of this Declaration by the First Congress of
People's Deputies marked the beginning of constitutional reform in
the Russian Soviet state. The day was originally called Russia
Independence Day, and it commemorates the disintegration of the
Soviet Union and the legitimate approval of the Declaration of
State Sovereignty. Surprisingly, many Russians first misunderstood
the significance of the occasion. However, many of them have come
to see Russian Independence Day as a symbol of the country's
modernization. On December 25, 1991, the country was renamed the
Russian Federation. The festival to mark this occasion in the
world's largest country, however, has undergone two name changes
since then. And although it was not a national holiday, it was
initially termed 'Independence Day.' The Russian Supreme Assembly
declared June 12 to be a national holiday in 1992. Yet In 1994,
President Boris Yeltsin declared the same date a national holiday
for the second time. To celebrate the country's reestablished
independence, the creation of the office of President, the
adoption of the historical national flag, and a new national song,
the day was renamed the 'Day of the Adoption of the Declaration of
Sovereignty of the Russian Federation.' It was later renamed
'Russia Day' on February 1, 2002, and has been celebrated annually
since then. While it has been an official holiday since 1991, it
was not widely observed until 2003, after Russian President
Vladimir Putin embraced and promoted it. The Russian Day
celebration, on the other hand, has evolved over time to become a
spectacular event. Acrobatic air shows from elite Russian
acrobatic teams were the highlight of the 2003 Russia Day event.
The military planes were also put on display, leaving a trail in
the shape of the Russian flag. In 2004, the Red Square
celebrations were highlighted by a historical military parade in
which Russian army personnel and representatives from 89 regions,
dressed in national costumes, presented the audience with the most
significant historical milestones in Russian history. =========

thousands, watching galas, fireworks, and live performances. The
Saint Petersburg City Administration organizes all cultural and
entertainment events, including ballet, opera, and classical
music. The summer event attracts the best of Russia's, and the
world's entertainers. The White Nights Festival was started by
Anatoly Sobchak in 1993. Sobchak was the first mayor of St.
Petersburg, and during his tenure, the city evolved into Russia's
cultural and sporting hub. As part of his initiative to develop
the city, he developed the idea of a holiday to celebrate Russian
culture, especially art and entertainment. The festival had a
series of classical ballet and music, opera, and other events at
the Mariinsky Theater and Mariinsky Concert Hall. The Scarlet
Sails celebration is the final and best-attended part of the White
Nights Festival. It is the most famous public event in St.
Petersburg. The spectacular fireworks displays and elaborate
performances bring the city to a standstill. The Scarlet Sails -
'Alye Parusa' in Russian - has been around since the 1960s and
began after World War II when schools in Russia united to
celebrate the end of their academic year. The celebration
organized in their honor took place on the Neva banks in St.
Petersburg. The practice was stopped in 1979 but was revived
decades later on June 24, 2005. In 1990, the White Nights
International Marathon and 10K Run through the streets of St.
Petersburg became part of the festivities. Over 5,000 runners
participated in these events each year, which helped promote the
city's status as Russia's sports capital. The White Nights

(German: Shame Against Culture): Book Burnings: The Disputation Of
Paris (Hebrew: Mishpat Pariz; French: Disputation de Paris) (The
Trial Of The Talmud (French: Proces du Talmud)): -- At the
instigation of Louis IX of France, an inter-faith "debate",
known as the Disputation Of Paris, starts between a Christian monk
and four of the most distinguished rabbis of France - Rabbis
Yechiel of Paris, Moses of Coucy, Judah of Melun, and Samuel ben
Solomon of Chateau-Thierry. Though cast as debate as part of the
Catholic Church's misguided and mendacious evangelistic efforts to
win the beliefs of the Jews through debate, it was in fact
actually constitued as a trial. Accordingly, on June 17, 1244 --
having found the Talmudic sages responsible for writing the Talmud
guilty of 35 charges of allegedly blasphemous passages about
Jesus, Mary and Christianity, such as supposedly permitting Jews
to kill non-Jews, to deceive Christians, and to break promises
made to them without scruples -- a tribunal consisting of Queen Of
France Blanche Of Castile, Archbishop Gauthier Le Cornu of Sens,
Bishop Guillaume d'Auvergne of Paris, Inquisitor Henri de Cologne,
Chancellor of the University of Paris Eudes de Chateauroux, and
the Christian tribunal's prosecutor, Nicholas Donin, a Franciscan
convert from Judaism who pressed for this trial upon Pope Gregory
IX and King Louis IX Of France, set in motion a set of events four
days following the debate/trial that result in an estimated
twenty-four carriage loads of some 10,000 volumes of Jewish
religious manuscripts being burnt in the streets Paris, a crime of
staggering historic proportions made even more despicible by the
fact that because the printing press did not yet exist, all these
copies were hand-written, and were therefore irreplaceable. On

June 12, 1381: The Middle Ages (The
Medieval Period, The Mediaeval Period): Peasant Revolts: Medieval
And Early Modern European Peasant Wars: The Peasants' Revolt (Wat
Tyler's Rebellion, The Great Rising): -- Inspired by the sermons
of the radical cleric John Ball and led by Wat Tyler, a contingent
of Kentish rebels arrive at Blackheath in Southeast London and
enter the city, joined by many local townsfolk, attacked the
gaols, destroyed the Savoy Palace, set fire to law books and
buildings in the Temple, and killed anyone associated with the
royal government. The following day, Richard met the rebels at
Mile End and acceded to most of their demands, including the
abolition of serfdom. Meanwhile, rebels entered the Tower of
London, killing the Lord Chancellor and the Lord High Treasurer,
whom they found inside. On June 15, Richard left the city to meet
Tyler and the rebels at Smithfield. Violence broke out, and
Richard's party killed Tyler. Richard defused the tense situation
long enough for London's mayor, William Walworth, to gather a
militia from the city and disperse the rebel forces. Richard
immediately began to re-establish order in London and rescinded
his previous grants to the rebels. The revolt had also spread into
East Anglia, where the University of Cambridge was attacked and
many royal officials were killed. Unrest continued until the
intervention of Henry Despenser, who defeated a rebel army at the
Battle of North Walsham on June 25 or 26. Troubles extended north
to York, Beverley and Scarborough, and as far west as Bridgwater
in Somerset. Richard mobilised 4,000 soldiers to restore order.
Most of the rebel leaders were tracked down and executed; by
November, at least 1,500 rebels had been killed. The Peasants'
Revolt was the result of the socio-economic and political tensions
generated by the Black Death in the 1340s, the high taxes
resulting from the conflict with France during the Hundred Years'
War, instability within the local leadership of London, and a host
of other causes, sparks The Peasants' Revolt, a major uprising
across large parts of England. The final trigger for the revolt
was the intervention of a royal official, John Bampton, in Essex
on May 30 1381, when his attempts to collect unpaid poll taxes in
Brentwood ended in a violent confrontation, which rapidly spread
across the south-east of the country. A wide spectrum of rural
society, including many local artisans and village officials, rose
up in protest, burning court records and opening the local gaols.
The rebels sought a reduction in taxation, an end to the system of
unfree labour known as serfdom, and the removal of the King's
senior officials and law courts. When they advanced on London,
they were met at Blackheath by representatives of the royal
government, who unsuccessfully attempted to persuade them to
return home. King Richard II, then aged 14, had retreated to the
safety of The Tower Of London, but most of the royal forces were
abroad or in northern England. The Peasants' Revolt has been
widely studied by academics. Late 19th-century historians used a
range of sources from contemporary chroniclers to assemble an
account of the uprising, and these were supplemented in the 20th
century by research using court records and local archives.
Interpretations of the revolt have shifted over the years. It was
once seen as a defining moment in English history, but modern
academics are less certain of its impact on subsequent social and
economic history. The revolt heavily influenced the course of the
Hundred Years' War, by deterring later Parliaments from raising
additional taxes to pay for military campaigns in France. The
revolt has been widely used in socialist literature, including by
the author William Morris, and remains a potent political symbol
for the political left, informing the arguments surrounding the
introduction of the Community Charge in the United Kingdom during
the 1980s. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

Middle Ages: The Anglo-French Wars (1109-1815): The Hundred Years'

Jargeau: -- On the second day of the battle, Joan Of Arc leads the
French army in their capture of the city and the English
commander, William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk, who was
nicknamed "Jackanapes". Suffolk's nickname "Jackanapes"
came from "Jack of Naples", a slang name for a monkey at
the time. This was probably due to his heraldic badge, which
consisted of an "ape's clog", i.e. a wooden block
chained to a pet monkey to prevent it escaping. The phrase
"jackanape" later came to mean an impertinent or
conceited person, due to the popular perception of Suffolk as a
nouveau riche upstart; his great-grandfather had been a wool
merchant from Hull (Winston Churchill would sometimes refer to
Benito Mussolini as "The Italian Jackanapes".). The
Battle Of Jargeau took place on June 11-12, 1429. It was Joan Of
Arc's first offensive battle. Shortly after relieving the siege at
Orleans, French forces recaptured the neighbouring district along
the Loire river. This campaign was the first sustained French
offensive in a generation in the Hundred Years' War. On Sale @ 15%

June 12, 1858: #BOTD: #HBD! Richard
Wetherill, member of the Colorado Wetherill ranching family,
amateur archaeologist who discovered, researched and excavated
sites associated with the Ancient Pueblo People (d. June 10, 1910)
is #born in Chester, Pennsylvania. He is credited with the
rediscovery of Cliff Palace in Mesa Verde in Colorado and was
responsible for initially selecting the term Anasazi, Navajo for
ancient enemies, as the name for these ancient people. He also
excavated Kiet Seel Ruin, now in Navajo National Monument in
northeastern Arizona, and Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon, New
Mexico. Wetherill was fascinated by the ruins and artifacts of the
Southwestern United States and made a living as a rancher, guide,
excavator of ancient ruins, and trading post operator. He was
criticized as a "pot hunter" by his archaeologist
competitors, although many of the artifacts he found were sold or
donated to prominent museums and his work was often financed or
overseen by museums. Richard Wetherill died when he was murdered
in Chaco Canyon aged 53 in mysterious circumstances. Wetherill was
living in Chaco Canyon, homesteading and operating a trading post
at Pueblo Bonito. On June 10, he was shot and killed by a young
Navajo, Chiishchili Biye'. Depending on the source, Wetherill was
either murdered in cold blood by the Navajo or, alternatively, the
murderer was influenced by the local Indian Agent against the
Wetherills due to political disputes over the use of Chaco Canyon.
The agent, Samuel F. Statcher, wanted to dam the canyon for water,
fence both ends for grazing and build an Indian School (a forced
"Americanizing" of the natives) among the ruins. Biye',
charged with the murder, served several years in prison, but was
released in 1914 due to poor health. Often described as a wealthy
or prosperous man, Wetherill's only asset at the time of his death
was ranch property worth five thousand dollars. He was owed more
than eleven thousand dollars by Navajos, Hispanics, and Anglos.
Little of the money owed Wetherill was ever collected by his widow
who lived in modest circumstances, dying in Albuquerque in 1954.
Wetherill and his wife Marietta are buried in the small cemetery
west of Pueblo Bonito along with several Navajos. The cemetery
lies just over a hundred meters west of Bonito behind a wooden
fence. Richard Wetherill's heirs donated a large collection of
artifacts to the University of New Mexico in 1954. Wetherill's
work was important in securing the designation of Mesa Verde as a
National Park and Chaco Canyon as a National Monument. On Sale @

Ulysses S. Grant gives the Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee
a victory when he pulls his Union troops from their position at
Cold Harbor, Virginia and moves south. It was fought from May 31
to June 12, 1864, with the most significant fighting occurring on
June 3. It was one of the final battles of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses
S. Grant's Overland Campaign, and is remembered as one of American
history's bloodiest, most lopsided battles. Thousands of Union
soldiers were killed or wounded in a hopeless frontal assault
against the fortified positions of Confederate Gen. Robert E.
Lee's army. Grant said of the battle in his memoirs, "I have

in the U.S. House of Representatives, as U.S. Ambassador to the
United Nations, as Director of Central Intelligence, and as the
43rd vice president. Bush was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut and
attended Phillips Academy before serving in the United States Navy
during World War II. He was the youngest naval aviator during his
service, and pilote a Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bomber of the US
Fast Carrier Task Force, and saw action providing air cover during
the allied landings at Guam and Saipan. He was shot down during a
raid on the japanese communications hub of Chichi Jima island, and
was rescued just before japanese boats captured him for to
certainly be eaten by the enemy, a rescue which was filmed and and
the footage preserved. After the war, he graduated from Yale
University and moved to West Texas, where he established a
successful oil company. After an unsuccessful run for the United
States Senate, he won election to the 7th congressional district
of Texas in 1966. President Richard Nixon appointed Bush to the
position of Ambassador to the United Nations in 1971 and to the
position of chairman of the Republican National Committee in 1973.
In 1974, President Gerald Ford appointed him as the Chief of the
Liaison Office to the People's Republic Of China, and in 1976 Bush
became the Director of Central Intelligence. Bush ran for
president in 1980, but was defeated in the Republican presidential
primaries by Ronald Reagan. He was then elected vice president in
1980 and 1984 as Reagan's running mate. In the 1988 presidential
election, Bush defeated Democrat Michael Dukakis, becoming the
first incumbent vice president to be elected president since
Martin Van Buren in 1836. Foreign policy drove the Bush
presidency, as he navigated the final years of the Cold War and
played a key role in the reunification of Germany. Bush presided
over the invasion of Panama and the Gulf War, ending the Iraqi
occupation of Kuwait in the latter conflict. Though the agreement
was not ratified until after he left office, Bush negotiated and
signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which
created a trade bloc consisting of the United States, Canada, and
Mexico. Domestically, Bush reneged on a 1988 campaign promise by
signing a bill that increased taxes and helped reduce the federal
budget deficit. He also signed the Americans with Disabilities Act
of 1990 and appointed David Souter and Clarence Thomas to the
Supreme Court. Bush lost the 1992 presidential election to
Democrat Bill Clinton following an economic recession and the
decreased emphasis of foreign policy in a post-Cold War political
climate. After leaving office in 1993, Bush was active in
humanitarian activities, often working alongside Clinton, his
former opponent. With George W. Bush's victory in the 2000
presidential election, Bush and his son became the second
father-son pair to serve as the nation's president, following John
Adams and John Quincy Adams. Another son, Jeb Bush, unsuccessfully
sought the Republican presidential nomination in the 2016
Republican primaries. After a long battle with vascular
Parkinson's disease, Bush died at his home on November 30, 2018,
aged 94, the last World War II veteran to serve as US President.

June 12, 1929: #BOTD: #HBD! Anne Frank,
German-Dutch diarist of Jewish heritage, one of the most discussed
Jewish victims of the Holocaust, who gained fame posthumously with
the 1947 publication of The Diary of a Young Girl (originally Het
Achterhuis in Dutch; English: The Secret Annex), in which she
documents her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944, during the German
occupation of the Netherlands in World War II (d. February or
March 1945) is #born Annelies Marie Frank in Frankfurt, Germany.
She is perhaps the best known victim of the Nazi Holocaust, having
kept a diary that she received as a gift for her thirteenth
birthday in 1942. Anne and her family moved from Germany to
Amsterdam to flee Nazi persecution, then went into hiding in a
small attic after Holland was invaded by Nazis. Anne, a girl on
the verge of womanhood, was unable to go outside for any reason.
She used her diary to cope with the boredom, fear, annoyances, and
loneliness of captivity. Her family's hiding place was eventually
discovered and Anne and her family were deported to Nazi
concentration camps. She contracted typhus and died at
Bergen-Belsen in 1945. After the war, her father published her
diary, which inspired the world, revealing a young woman who had
managed to remain hopeful, despite it all. It is one of the
world's best-known books and has been the basis for several plays
and films. Born in Frankfurt, Germany, she lived most of her life
in or near Amsterdam, Netherlands, having moved there with her
family at the age of four and a half when Adolf Hitler and the
Nazi Party gained control over Germany. Born a German national,
she lost her citizenship in 1941 and thus became stateless. By May
1940, the Franks were trapped in Amsterdam by the German
occupation of the Netherlands. As persecutions of the Jewish
population increased in July 1942, the Franks went into hiding in
some concealed rooms behind a bookcase in the building where
Anne's father, Otto Frank, worked. From then until the family's
arrest by the Gestapo in August 1944, she kept a diary she had
received as a birthday present, and wrote in it regularly.
Following their arrest, the Franks were transported to
concentration camps. On November 1, 1944, Anne and her sister,
Margot, were transferred from Auschwitz to Bergen-Belsen
concentration camp, where they died (probably of typhus) a few
months later. They were originally estimated by the Red Cross to
have died in March, with Dutch authorities setting March 31 as
their official date of death, but research by the Anne Frank House
in 2015 suggests it is more likely that they died in February.
Otto, the only survivor of the Frank family, returned to Amsterdam
after the war to find that her diary had been saved by his
secretary, Miep Gies, and his efforts led to its publication in
1947. It was translated from its original Dutch version and first
published in English in 1952 as The Diary of a Young Girl, and has
since been translated into over 70 languages. On Sale @ 15% Off

American actor, singer, and comedian, widely known for his
signature character, Gomer Pyle (d. November 30, 2017) is #born
James Thurston Nabors in Sylacauga, Alabama. Nabors was discovered
by Andy Griffith while working at a Santa Monica nightclub, and he
later joined The Andy Griffith Show, where he played the
good-natured, unsophisticated Gomer Pyle. The character proved so
popular that Nabors was given his own successful spin-off show,

variety shows that showcased his rich baritone singing voice in
the 1960s and 1970s. He was the featured guest on every season
premiere of The Carol Burnett Show and he had two specials of his
own in 1969 and 1974. He signed a recording contract with Columbia
Records in 1965 and subsequently recorded numerous albums and
singles, most of them containing romantic ballads. He recorded for
Ranwood Records during the late 1970s. Nabors was also known for
singing "Back Home Again In Indiana" before the start of
the Indianapolis 500, held annually on the Memorial Day weekend.
He sang the unofficial Indiana anthem almost every year from 1972
to 2014, except for occasional absences due to illness or
scheduling conflicts. On January 15, 2013, Nabors married his
partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, at the Fairmont Olympic
Hotel in Seattle, Washington, a month after same-sex marriage
became legal in Washington. They had met in the 1970s, when
Cadwallader was a fireman in Honolulu, and began dating in 1975.
Although Nabors's homosexuality was not widely known before this,
it was also not completely secret. For instance, Nabors brought
his then-partner Cadwallader along to his Indy 500 performance in
1978. A longstanding rumor maintains that Nabors married actor
Rock Hudson in the early 1970s, shortly before Nabors began his
relationship with Cadwallader. Not only was same-sex marriage not
yet legal anywhere in the United States at the time, but the two
closeted gay actors were, according to each, never more than
casual friends. According to Hudson, the story originated with a
group of "middle-aged homosexuals who live in Huntington
Beach", who sent out joke invitations for their annual
get-together. One year, the group invited its members to witness
"the marriage of Rock Hudson and Jim Nabors", at which
Hudson would take the surname of Nabors' most famous character,
Gomer Pyle, becoming "Rock Pyle". The rumors spread, and
because of this the two made sure they were never seen in public
together. Jim Nabors died of undisclosed causes at his Honolulu,
Hawaii, home aged 87. He was cremated and the ashes were scattered
in Honolulu. The United States Marine Corps released a statement
on Nabors: "Semper Fi, Gomer Pyle. Rest in peace Jim Nabors,
one of the few to ever be named an Honorary Marine." In an

general (b. 1893) is executed, having been found guilty of various
crimes in the show trial known as the Case of Trotskyist
Anti-Soviet Military Organization. At 11:35 PM the night before,
the Soviet Supreme Court's special military tribunal declared
guilty and sentenced to death eight army leaders: 1) Marshal
Mikhail Tukhachevsky, 2) Iona Yakir, 3) Ieronim Uborevich, 4)
Robert Eideman, 5) August Kork, 6) Vitovt Putna, 7) Boris Feldman
and 8) Vitaly Primakov; Yakov Gamarnik, who was among the accused,
committed suicide before the investigations began. Most of the
judges were in fear for their lives; one was heard to comment,
"Tomorrow I'll be put in the same place." (Five of the
eight officers serving as judges in that court martial were later
executed themselves.). Stalin, who was awaiting the verdict with
Molotov, Kaganovich, and Yezhov, did not even examine the
transcripts. He simply said, "Agreed.". Within the hour,
Tukhachevsky was summoned from his cell by NKVD captain Vasili
Blokhin. As Yezhov watched, the former Marshal was shot once in
the back of the head. Immediately afterward, Yezhov was summoned
into Stalin's presence. Stalin asked, "What were
Tukhachevsky's last words?" Yezhov responded, "The snake
said he was dedicated to the Motherland and Comrade Stalin. He
asked for clemency. But it was obvious that he was not being
straight, he hadn't laid down his arms.". Mikhail
Nikolayevich Tukhachevsky (February 16 [O.S. February 4] 1893 -
June 12, 1937) was a leading Soviet military leader and
theoretician from 1918 to 1937. He commanded the Soviet Western
Front in the Soviet-Polish War of 1920-1921 and served as Chief Of
Staff of the Red Army from 1925 through 1928, as assistant in the
People's Commissariat of Defense after 1934 and as commander of
the Volga Military District in 1937. He contributed to the
modernization of Soviet armament and army force structure in the
1920s and 1930s and became instrumental in the development of
aviation, mechanized, and airborne forces. As a theoretician, he
was a driving force behind Soviet development of the theory of
deep operations. The Soviet authorities accused him of treason and
had him shot during the military purges of 1937-1938, but
rehabilitated his reputation in the 1960s. The Case of Trotskyist
Anti-Soviet Military Organization, also known as The Military
Case, was a secret trial, unlike the Moscow Show Trials, both of
which are part of The Great Purge, also known as The Great Terror,
Joseph Stalin's campaign of political repression in the Soviet
Union which occurred from 1936 to 1938, involving a large-scale
purge of the Communist Party and government officials, repression
of peasants and the Red Army leadership, widespread police
surveillance, suspicion of "saboteurs",
"counter-revolutionaries", imprisonment, and arbitrary
executions. Being as they were the Soviet Union's top military
echelon, their talents were not at hand to help defend the nation
when Nazi Germany invaded in 1941, and the nation suffered greatly
as a result - a fate made ironic by the fact that these leaders
were accused among other things of being German agents. On Sale @

-- Thirteen thousand trapped British and French troops, including
the British 51st (Highland) Infantry Division commanded by
Major-General Victor Fortune and troops of the French IX Corps,
surrender to Major General Erwin Rommel at Saint-Valery-en-Caux, a
commune in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region in
northern France, which was partly destroyed in the fighting there.
The 51st Division had remained in France after the general
evacuation from Dunkirk, having been assigned to the French IX
Corps. After naval evacuation proved impossible and supplies of
ammunition had been exhausted, Major-General Fortune was forced to
surrender the greater part of the Highland Division at St Valery
en Caux. Fortune spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war.
As senior British officer in captivity in Germany, he worked to
improve the conditions of the men under his command. He suffered a
stroke in 1944 but refused repatriation. He was finally liberated
in April 1945 and made KBE shortly after. Several British writers
have questioned the decision to remain with the French during the
battle. However, General Charles de Gaulle stated, 'For my part, I
can say that the comradeship of arms, sealed on the battlefield of
Abbeville in May-June 1940, between the French armoured division,
which I had the honour to command, and the gallant 51st Scottish
Division under General Fortune, played its part in the decision
which I made to continue the fight at the side of the Allies, to
the end, come what may'. And he concluded by quoting the old motto
of the Garde Ecossaise: Omni Modo Fidelis - faithful in every way.

June 12, 1941: #BOTD: #HBD! Reg Presley,
English singer and songwriter, lead singer with the 1960s rock and
roll band the Troggs, whose hits included "Wild Thing"
(#1 on the Hot 100 July 30 - August 6, 1966) and "With a Girl
Like You" (#1 on the UK Official Singles Chart August 4-11,
1966), author of the international top-ten hits "Love Is All
Around" and "I Can't Control Myself" (d. February
4, 2013) is #born Reginald Maurice Ball in Andover, Hampshire,
England. His father was a milkman, later a bus driver, and his
mother ran a cafe. He left school at the age of fifteen. He joined
the building trade on leaving school and became a bricklayer. He
gave up this job when the Troggs' song Wild Thing entered the top
ten in the United Kingdom music charts in 1966. His first band was
a skiffle group he formed with friend Howard Mansfield, with
Mansfield on lead vocals and Reg on bass guitar. When Mansfield
left, he moved to lead vocalist, and soon after Chris Britton
joined on guitar, Pete Staples on bass, and Ronnie Bond on drums,
and the group changed their name to The Troglodytes, and the
classic lineup was formed. As the Troglodytes, they won a Battle
of the Bands talent contest in Oxford in 1965, and sent a demo
tape to the rock entrepreneur Larry Page, who shortened their name
to the Troggs. Presley was given his stage name in 1965 by the New
Musical Express journalist and publicist Keith Altham as a joke.
Larry Page asked the New Musical Express journalist Keith Altham
for help in finding a better stage name for the lead singer. In
order to get media attention, Altham suggested altering Ball's
surname to Presley and the new name was listed alongside those of
the other Troggs members in the NME's next issue. Page forgot to
tell Reg of the name change and was originally enraged and had
confronted Page, thinking that he had been replaced in the group.
He kept at his occupation of a bricklayer, until "Wild Thing"
reached the top 10 on the UK Singles Chart in 1966. It reached No.
2 in the UK, and No. 1 in the US, selling five million copies.
Wild Thing sold over five million copies. Presley wrote the hits
"With a Girl Like You", "I Can't Control Myself"
and "Love Is All Around". Wet Wet Wet's 1994 cover of
the latter 1967 song stayed at No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart for
fifteen weeks. Presley was in the Troggs until 2012, when he
announced his retirement from the music industry after suffering
from a number of strokes. Presley's departure left only guitarist
Chris Britton from the original Troggs lineup still remaining in
the group. Britton is still in the Troggs as of 2023. In 1988,
Presley formed The Corporation with Tony Crane, Clem Curtis, Mike
Pender, and Brian Poole, who all were the lead singers of other
pop groups during the 1960s: The Merseybeats, The Foundations, The
Searchers, and Brian Poole and The Tremeloes, in the same order as
the members names were listed. They recorded one single: Ain't
Nothing But a House Party, that had its instrumental as the
B-side. The song was released as a 7" single, and an extended
mix, also with the instrumental as the B-side, was released as a
12" single. Presley used the musical royalties he made from
the Troggs' records and the royalties he made from the Wet Wet Wet
cover to fund research on subjects such as alien spacecraft, lost
civilisations, alchemy, and crop circles, and outlined his
findings in his own penned book Wild Things They Don't Tell Us,
published in October 2002. His interest in the paranormal was
found one in 1990 when he walked into a crop circle at Alton
Barnes in Marlborough, Wiltshire. Presley claimed to have seen
fourteen UFOs in his life. In December 2011, Presley was
hospitalised in Winchester, Hampshire, with what was suspected to
be a stroke. He was also suffering from pneumonia and fluid around
the heart. Presley had suffered a major stroke about a year
before. His wife said he first began to feel ill while performing
in Germany on 3 December 2011 and had got progressively worse.
"Doctors think he has had another stroke. He's not very well
and I have no idea how long he'll be in hospital", she said.
The following month, Presley announced he had been diagnosed with
lung cancer and therefore decided to retire from the music
industry. Just over a year later, Presley died of lung cancer and
a succession of strokes in his hometown of Andover, Hampshire,
England, aged 71. Presley was cremated at Basingstoke Crematorium,
Hampshire. His ashes were given to his wife of 50 years, Brenda,
mother of theri son and daughter who he met at dance in Andover,
and proposed to that very night; she responded "But you don't
even know me" - and the rest is history :) . A blue plaque in
his memory was unveiled in Andover High Street on July 31, 2016,
marking where The Troggs used to practice. Presley's music has
influenced Iggy Pop and won praise from Bob Dylan. The rock critic
Lester Bangs called the Troggs the "godfathers of punk"
and compared Presley to Marcel Proust. Presley appears as a
character in Steve Erickson's novel These Dreams of You (2012). On

June 12, 1963: #DOTD: #RIP: Medgar Evers,
African American civil rights activist in Mississippi, the state's
field secretary of the NAACP, and Prince Hall Freemason (b. July
2, 1925) #dies when he is assassinated in front of his wife and
children in the driveway of his home in Jackson, Mississippi, by a
rifle bullet from an ambush by white supremacist and Klansman from
Greenwood, Mississippi Byron De La Beckwith, a member of the White
Citizens' Council, a group was formed in 1954 to resist racial
integration of schools, civil rights activism and voter
registration reform, all efforts that Evers been an outspoken
leader of as a NAACP organizer. That evening, The Open Mind, the
longest running tv series in the history of American public
television, broadcast live a two-hour "Race Relations In
America Special Report" which dealt with the assassination
and the state of the movement a mere two months before The March
On Washington, with host Richard Heffner moderating the discussion
between panelists James Farmer, founder and National Director of
CORE, the Congress Of Racial Equality; Wyatt Tee Walker, Chief Of
Staff of the Southern Christian Leadership Congress led by Martin
Luther King; Allan Morrison, New York editor of Ebony magazine;
and Nation Of Islam leader Malcolm X, striking a contrary but
eerily prophetic tone in the midst of this plaintive and urgent
discussion. Medgar Evers was born Medgar Wiley Evers in Decatur,
Mississippi. He worked to overturn segregation at the University
of Mississippi, to end segregation of public facilities, and to
expand opportunities for African Americans, including enforcement
of voting rights. A World War II veteran and college graduate,
Evers became active in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s.
Following the 1954 ruling of the United States Supreme Court in
Brown v. Board of Education that segregated public schools were
unconstitutional, Evers challenged the segregation of the
state-supported public University of Mississippi, applying to law
school there. He also worked for voting rights, economic
opportunity, access to public facilities, and other changes in the
segregated society. Evers was awarded the 1963 NAACP Spingarn
Medal. As a veteran, Evers was buried with full military honors at
Arlington National Cemetery. His murder and the resulting trials
inspired civil rights protests; his life and these events inspired
numerous works of art, music, and film. All-white juries failed to
reach verdicts in the first two trials of Beckwith due to hung
juries in the 1960s. On February 5, 1994, Beckwith (November 9,
1920 - January 21, 2001) was convicted in a new trial based on new
evidence and sentenced to life in prison. Seven years after being
convicted of killing Evers, De La Beckwith died in prison in 2001
at the age of 80. Medgar's widow Myrlie Evers became a noted
activist in her own right, serving as national chair of the NAACP.

elected in Mississippi in the post-Reconstruction era when he won
in 1969 in Fayette. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

June 12, 1964: South Africa: The History
Of South Africa: Segregation: Racial Segregation: Apartheid
(Racial Segregation In South Africa): The Rivonia Trial: --
Anti-apartheid activist and ANC leader Nelson Mandela is sentenced
to life in prison for sabotage in South Africa. The Rivonia Trial
took place in South Africa between 9 October 1963 and 12 June
1964, and led to the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela and the others
among the accused who were convicted of sabotage and sentenced to
life at the Palace of Justice, Pretoria. Although initially
committed to non-violent protest, in association with the South
African Communist Party (SACP) Mandela co-founded the militant
Umkhonto we Sizwe organization in 1961 and led a sabotage campaign
against the government as a response to the March 21, 1960
Sharpeville Massacre. The Sharpeville Massacre occurred after a
day of demonstrations against pass laws, a form of internal
passport system designed to segregate the population, manage
urbanisation, and allocate migrant labour. A crowd of about 5,000
to 7,000 protesters went to the police station. The South African
Police opened fire on the crowd, killing 69 people. Sources
disagree as to the behaviour of the crowd; some state that the
crowd was peaceful, while others state that the crowd had been
hurling stones at the police, and that the shooting started when
the crowd started advancing toward the fence around the police
station. There were 289 casualties in total, including 29
children. Many sustained back injuries from being shot as they
fled (In present-day South Africa, 21 March is celebrated as a
public holiday in honour of human rights and to commemorate the
Sharpeville massacre.). The purpose of Umkhonto we Sizwe, as a
response to this massacre was to attack installations involved in
the repression of the people (such as the radio station from which
police used to radio commands to attacking police officers during
the Sharpesville Massacre). In 1962, due to his involvement with
Umkhonto we Sizwe, he was arrested for conspiring to overthrow the
state, and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Rivonia Trial.
Umkhonto we Sizwe, meaning "The Spear of the Nation",
abbreviated as MK, was the paramilitary wing of the African
National Congress (ANC), co-founded by Nelson Mandela in the wake
of the Sharpeville massacre. Its founding represented the
conviction in the face of the massacre that the ANC could no
longer limit itself to nonviolent protest; its mission was to
fight against and topple the South African government and the
ruling National Party. After warning the South African government
in June 1961 of its intent to resist further acts of government
instituted terror if the government did not take steps toward
constitutional reform and increased voting rights, MK launched its
first attacks against government installations on 16 December
1961. It was subsequently classified as a terrorist organisation
by the South African government and the United States, and banned.
For a time it was headquartered in the affluent suburb of Rivonia,
in Johannesburg. On 11 July 1963, 19 ANC and MK leaders, including
Nelson Mandela, Arthur Goldreich and Walter Sisulu, were arrested
at Liliesleaf Farm, Rivonia. The farm was privately owned by
Arthur Goldreich and bought with South African Communist Party and
ANC funds, as individuals who were not white were unable to own a
property in that area under the Group Areas Act. This was followed
by the Rivonia Trial, in which ten leaders of the ANC were tried
for 221 militant acts designed to "foment violent
revolution". Wilton Mkwayi, chief of MK at the time, escaped
during trial. MK was integrated into the South African National
Defence Force by 1994. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

1967 (June 12-18, 1967): -- Riots begin and last for several days
in response to the June 11 arrest of Peter Frakes, the cousin of
"Cincinatti Strangler" Posteal Laskey Jr., who was
convicted the preceding May of the rape and murder of one of seven
women of which Laskey was the main suspect. Although he was never
charged with the other murders, the media and police blamed him
for the other deaths since according to the official version of
the investigators, the murders ceased after his arrest; the jury's
decision was seen as being racist and controversial. Frakes was
arrested for picketing with a sign that read, "Cincinnati
Guilty - Laskey Innocent!", despite his peaceably exercising
his First Amendment rights. Incensed Black community leaders held
a protest meeting on June 12 at the Abraham Lincoln statue on the
corner of Reading and Rockdale Roads. Some people broke away from
the riot in order to damage property. In Avondale some of the
rioters smashed, looted, damaged cars, buildings, and stores. A
witness reported, "there's not a window left on Reading Road
or Burnett Avenue. The youths are doing it and adults are standing
by and laughing. All ages are active. Women could be seen carrying
babies." The rioting spread from Avondale to Bond Hill,
Winton Terrace, Walnut Hills, Corryville, Clifton, West End, and
Downtown. A 15-year-old boy was critically wounded in front of a
fire station that was being fired upon by a car full of rioters.
According to an Avondale resident, rioting was over the constant
police harassment, lack of jobs, and shopkeepers "jacking up
prices and selling bad products." Governor James A. Rhodes
ordered 700 Ohio National Guardsmen into Cincinnati to halt the
rioters. The National Guard patrolled the streets in jeeps, armed
with machine guns. Rioters avoided these armed forces as the
Guardsmen were given the order to kill if they were fired upon. By
June 15, when the riot had been stopped, one person was dead, 63
injured, 404 had been arrested, and the city had incurred 2M USD
in property damage. The day before the riots began Martin Luther

posthumous Victoria Cross. He is buried at Pinegrove Memorial Park
in Minchinbury, Blacktown City, New South Wales, Australia. Ian
McKay was born Ian John McKay in Wortley, near Barnsley, South
Yorkshire, England. On the night of June 11, after several days of
painstaking reconnaissance and logistic build-up, British forces
launched a brigade-sized night attack against the heavily defended
ring of high ground surrounding Stanley. Units of 3 Commando
Brigade, supported by naval gunfire from several Royal Navy ships,
simultaneously attacked in the Battle of Mount Harriet, Battle of
Two Sisters, and Battle of Mount Longdon. Mount Harriet was taken
at a cost of 2 British and 18 Argentine soldiers. At Two Sisters,
the British faced both enemy resistance and friendly fire, but
managed to capture their objectives. The toughest battle was at
Mount Longdon. British forces were bogged down by assault rifle,
mortar, machine gun, artillery fire, sniper fire, and ambushes.
Despite this, the British continued their advance. During this
battle, 13 were killed when HMS Glamorgan, straying too close to
shore while returning from the gun line, was struck by an
improvised trailer-based Exocet MM38 launcher taken from the
destroyer ARA Segui by Argentine Navy technicians. After a night
of fierce fighting, all objectives were secured. Both sides
suffered heavy losses. The night of June 13 saw the start of the
second phase of attacks, in which the momentum of the initial
assault was maintained. 2 Para, with light armour support from The
Blues and Royals, captured Wireless Ridge, with the loss of 3
British and 25 Argentine lives, and the 2nd battalion, Scots
Guards captured Mount Tumbledown at the Battle of Mount
Tumbledown, which cost 10 British and 30 Argentine lives. With the
last natural defence line at Mount Tumbledown breached, the
Argentine town defences of Stanley began to falter. In the morning
gloom, one company commander got lost and his junior officers
became despondent. Private Santiago Carrizo of the 3rd Regiment
described how a platoon commander ordered them to take up
positions in the houses and "if a Kelper resists, shoot him",
but the entire company did nothing of the kind. A ceasefire was
declared on June 14, and the commander of the Argentine garrison
in Stanley, Brigade General Mario Menendez, conditionally
surrendered to British Major General Jeremy Moore. The Falklands
War (Spanish: Guerra de las Malvinas), also known as the Falklands
Conflict, Falklands Crisis, Malvinas War, South Atlantic Conflict,
and the Guerra del Atlantico Sur (Spanish for "South Atlantic
War"), was a ten-week war between Argentina and the United
Kingdom over two British dependent territories in the South
Atlantic: the Falkland Islands, and its territorial dependency,
the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It began on
Friday, 2 April 1982, when Argentina invaded and occupied the
Falkland Islands (and, the following day, South Georgia and the
South Sandwich Islands) in an attempt to establish the sovereignty
it had claimed over them. On 5 April, the British government
dispatched a naval task force to engage the Argentine Navy and Air
Force before making an amphibious assault on the islands. The
conflict lasted 74 days and ended with the Argentine surrender on
14 June 1982, returning the islands to British control. In total,
649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel,
and three Falkland Islanders died during the hostilities. The
conflict was a major episode in the protracted confrontation over
the territories' sovereignty. Argentina asserted (and maintains)
that the islands are Argentine territory, and the Argentine
government thus characterised its military action as the
reclamation of its own territory. The British government regarded
the action as an invasion of a territory that had been a Crown
colony since 1841. Falkland Islanders, who have inhabited the
islands since the early 19th century, are predominantly
descendants of British settlers, and strongly favour British
sovereignty. Neither state officially declared war, although both
governments declared the Islands a war zone. Hostilities were
almost exclusively limited to the territories under dispute and
the area of the South Atlantic where they lie. The conflict has
had a strong effect in both countries and has been the subject of
various books, articles, films, and songs. Patriotic sentiment ran
high in Argentina, but the outcome prompted large protests against
the ruling military government, hastening its downfall. In the
United Kingdom, the Conservative government, bolstered by the
successful outcome, was re-elected with an increased majority the
following year. The cultural and political effect of the conflict
has been less in the UK than in Argentina, where it remains a
common topic for discussion. Diplomatic relations between the
United Kingdom and Argentina were restored in 1989 following a
meeting in Madrid, at which the two governments issued a joint
statement. No change in either country's position regarding the
sovereignty of the Falkland Islands was made explicit. In 1994,
Argentina's claim to the territories was added to its
constitution. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

Reagan's speech received relatively little media coverage at the
time, it became widely known after the fall of the Berlin Wall in
1989. In the post-Cold War era, it was often seen as one of the
most memorable performances of an American president in Berlin
after John F. Kennedy's "Ich Bin Ein Berliner" Speech of
1963. It was written by Reagan speechwriter Peter Robinson. On

June 12, 1994: Crime: Crime In The United
States: The Murder Trial Of O. J. Simpson (The People Of The State
Of California V. Orenthal James Simpson): -- #DOTD: #RIP: Nicole
Brown Simpson and Ronald Lyle "Ron" Goldman are murdered
outside Simpson's home in Los Angeles. Her estranged husband, O.J.
Simpson is later charged but acquitted by a jury of the murders.
The People of the State of California v. Orenthal James Simpson
was a criminal trial in Los Angeles County Superior Court, in
which former National Football League (NFL) player and actor O. J.
Simpson was tried and acquitted for the murders of his ex-wife
Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. The two were
stabbed to death outside Brown's condominium in Los Angeles on
June 12, 1994. The murder trial spanned eight months, from January
24 to October 3, 1995. Though prosecutors argued that Simpson was
implicated by a significant amount of forensic evidence, he was
acquitted of both murders on October 3. Commentators agree that to
convince the majority-Black jury to acquit Simpson, the defense
capitalized on anger among the city's African-American community
toward the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), which had a
history of racial bias and had inflamed racial tensions in major
incidents two years prior. The trial is often characterized as the
trial of the century because of its international publicity and
has been described as the "most publicized" criminal
trial in history. Simpson was formally charged with the murders on
June 17, when he did not turn himself in at the agreed time, he
became the subject of a police pursuit. TV stations interrupted
coverage of the 1994 NBA Finals to broadcast live coverage of the
pursuit, which was watched by around 95 million people. The
pursuit and Simpson's arrest were among the most widely publicized
events in history. Simpson was represented by a high-profile
defense team, referred to as the "Dream Team", initially
led by Robert Shapiro and subsequently directed by Johnnie
Cochran. The team included F. Lee Bailey, Alan Dershowitz, Robert
Kardashian, Shawn Holley, Carl E. Douglas, and Gerald Uelmen.
While Deputy District Attorneys Marcia Clark, William Hodgman, and
Christopher Darden believed they had a strong case, the defense
team persuaded the jury there was reasonable doubt concerning the
DNA evidence. They contended the blood sample had been mishandled
by lab scientists and that the case had been tainted by LAPD
misconduct related to racism and incompetence. The use of DNA
evidence in trials was relatively new, and many laypersons did not
understand how to evaluate it. The trial was considered
significant for the wide division in reaction to the verdict.
Observers' opinions of the verdict were largely related to their
ethnicity; the media dubbed this the "racial gap". A
poll of Los Angeles County residents showed most African Americans
thought the "not guilty" verdict was justified while
most whites thought it was a racially motivated jury nullification
by the mostly African-American jury. Polling in later years showed
the gap had narrowed since the trial; more than half of polled
Black respondents expressed the belief that Simpson was guilty. In
2017, three jurors who acquitted Simpson said they would still
vote to acquit, while one said he would convict. After the trial,
Goldman's father filed a civil suit against Simpson. In 1997, the
jury unanimously found Simpson responsible for the deaths of
Goldman and Brown. The Goldman family was awarded damages totaling
34M USD (64M USD in 2023), but as of 2024 have received a small
portion of that. After Simpson died in 2024, John Dunton, a key
witness who had refused to testify at the trial, broke his silence
and said that Simpson was indeed at the scene when the murders
occurred and hired four gangsters from the Gambino crime family to
kill Nicole and Goldman. Dunton said he had remained silent until
Simpson's death because of threats he had received. On Sale @ 15%
